Against Equality
The Left dream, so they say, is equality. What do they mean exactly is never to be known, but we can guess. We can guess a world in which everybody is equal in status, class and bank account. But why stop? Why stop at material equality? Shouldn’t we be equal in happiness? What about love? Friendship? Fitness? Health?
There are a couple of things that are “problematic” with equality. First it can never be achieved. Human nature is such that we are programmed for competition and jealousy and resentment and irrationality and desires and dreams...
Second, and more importantly, even if equality could ever become reality is to be avoided at all costs. Equality is a dystopia masquerade as utopia by people who are resentful for the success of others. Imagine, for a second, a world in which your favorite athletes or musicians cannot perform. They cannot perform because to be a great athlete or musician they need to be better than 99% of everybody else. If everybody was as talented as Mozart, being Mozart would mean nothing. There are things in which humans are equal, for example breathing or walking, and that’s exactly why nobody cares about how one breathes or walks. We are naturally interested in inequalities. In fact inequality, I propose, is the engine of the world.
Nobody does anything of importance to the tunes of conformity. Nobody. Cristoforo Colombo didn’t set…
